Many of us are not quite familiar with the term “Somatic coaching”. What does this form of coaching exactly refer to? Well, Somatics is one of the fields where you attempt to peek into your “self” through various physical activities and movements to improve your overall performance as a person. The word somatic comes from the Greek word "soma" which means body. Not the body we often consider as skin or bones but the whole body, its aliveness. You might be getting the feeling of something related to psychology, well! you are right in some way.
Experienced Somatic coaches pay attention to the whole self, considering all the factors that are hindering your performance and also advise how to overcome those to work it out.
A psychology theory is that "the whole is more than the sum of its parts". This means that different factors have importance individually but when these factors combine, the result or the whole thing becomes greater than those individual factors. In other words, you can say that your biological body works in a certain way and your mind works differently which can cause serious mental disorders. And when your mind and body work together, it makes you "YOU", for instance, how you act in a certain way, whether you are assertive or submissive, if you are decisive or indecisive.
Over a period of time, due to a variety of experiences, we develop a certain pattern in terms of our thoughts and behaviors. Sometimes we are aware of it, but most of the time it is just the habitual pattern that we keep on moving in a cycle and we don't even recognize it. And we are so accustomed to repeating and living those patterns that we become afraid of trying something new. And this fear, in turn, holds us back from changing the way we think and behave. And a similar response is given by our body such as our heart rate, sweat, palpitation, tense muscles.
Then comes a point where you are unable to stop the loop and understand what is really happening and similarly, unable to resolve those challenges. This is where somatic coaching comes into play and it focuses on "how" to do what you want to do, such as you may want your relationship to be better but some part of you holds you back. There is no shame in asking for help and making your life better as everyone deserves it.
Somatic coaching not only focuses on the mind but also on the body, for example, it teaches you how to communicate more effectively by teaching cognitive skills and it also trains your body to express the words and present them in more commanding and confident ways. You might have understood that it pays attention to your physical self, emotional self, and intellectual self that allows you to interact with others by design not by the accident.
